Adventures Abound Around Van Buren, Arkansas!

Flat Rock Village in Van Buren, Arkansas lies on the western border just 10 miles from Oklahoma. We’re just across the Arkansas River from Fort Smith, approximately 40 miles south of Fayetteville and 76 miles south of Bentonville. Our property is situated along Interstate 40 which leads less than 5 miles southwest to the historic downtown of Fort Smith, home to many local eateries, shops, retailers, and the Baptist Health Hospital.

History and Culture

Van Buren, Arkansas is one of the oldest cities in Arkansas and is home to the King Opera House, a Victorian-style performance hall from the late 19th century, part of the old downtown historic area. At the south end of the historical downtown is the Crawford County courthouse, the oldest functioning courthouse west of the Mississippi River. Van Buren has also become a shopping mecca for rare collectibles, unique gifts, original art, local crafts, decor, and extraordinary antiques.

Festivities

The Van Buren area is also known for its many community-wide events, including two yearly fairs: the Old Timers Day Arts & Crafts Festival held in May, and the Annual Fall Festival held in October. You’ll also find nighttime “car cruises,” live music, and much more.

Excursions

Van Buren is also known as the entry point for a variety of excursion trains. The Old Frisco Station and museum is located on historic Main Street and can be seen in the movie “Biloxi Blues”. The old depot is also where visitors can catch a ride on an Arkansas and Missouri vintage passenger car.

Nearby Bentonville

Nearby Bentonville is just an hour away from Flat Rock Village. It’s known as the birthplace of the retailer Walmart, and the downtown Walmart Museum which includes founder Sam Walton’s original five-and-dime store. Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art displays work from the colonial era to the present. Its sprawling grounds include forest trails, sculpture gardens and waterside pavilions. The Scott Family “Amazeum” offers hands-on science and art exhibits.
